Shipping is where many import budgets are decided. Understanding a few basic concepts makes quotations much easier to read.
Chargeable weight
Freight is generally charged on whichever is greater: actual weight or volumetric weight. A light but bulky carton can therefore be charged as though it were much heavier.
Consolidation
Goods from several suppliers are often combined into a single shipment. This can reduce cost, but it adds a coordination step and can affect timing.
Air freight
Generally faster and better suited to smaller, lighter or urgent consignments. Cost per kilogram is higher.
Sea freight
Generally more economical for larger volumes and heavier cargo, with longer transit times and more handling stages.
What affects the final cost

Why quotes vary
Freight rates and handling charges change over time and by shipment. A quote given for one consignment will not necessarily apply to the next, even for the same product.
