Importing from China is one of the most common ways Bangladeshi businesses build a product range. The process itself is not complicated, but it becomes expensive when steps are skipped. This guide explains the sequence most importers follow.
1. Decide the product before you decide the supplier
Start with a product you can actually sell. Look at what already moves in your market, what margin you need, and how much stock you can realistically hold. A product with a clear buyer is far easier to import than a product that simply looked attractive on a supplier listing.
2. Understand the real landed cost
The listed unit price is only one part of the cost. Before ordering, map out every component you can identify:
- Unit price at your intended quantity
- Inner and outer packaging
- Local movement inside China to the shipping point
- Freight charges for the shipping method you choose
- Applicable duties, taxes and other charges in Bangladesh
- Local delivery to your warehouse or shop
Costs vary by product type, quantity, supplier and shipping method, so treat every estimate as a working figure until it is confirmed for your specific shipment.
3. Check the product before bulk ordering
Where possible, review samples or detailed product information before committing to a large quantity. For many first-time importers, a smaller trial order is a more sensible way to test both the product and the process.
4. Choose a shipping method that matches the product
Air shipping generally suits smaller, lighter and time-sensitive shipments. Sea shipping generally suits larger, heavier or bulkier consignments where cost per unit matters more than speed. The right choice depends on your product, quantity and budget.
5. Prepare for the paperwork side
Import documentation requirements depend on the product category, the value of the shipment and your business setup. Requirements change over time, so confirm current rules with the relevant authority or a qualified professional rather than relying on general articles.
6. Plan the receiving end
Decide in advance where the goods will be stored, how they will be checked on arrival, and how quickly you can start selling. Stock sitting unchecked for weeks is a common and avoidable cost.
