Buying wholesale from China is mostly about understanding how quantity, quality tier and packaging interact. Get those three right and most other decisions become simpler.
Minimum order quantity (MOQ)
MOQ is the smallest quantity a supplier will accept for a given product. It exists because production and packing have fixed costs. MOQ is sometimes negotiable, particularly on stock items, but rarely on customised products.
Quality tiers
Almost every product category has a low, middle and higher tier. Buying the cheapest tier and selling it as a premium product is one of the fastest ways to lose repeat customers. Decide which tier your market actually wants.
Packaging is part of the product
Retail packaging, bulk packing and custom-printed packaging carry different costs and different minimum quantities. If you sell in a shop, packaging affects your sell-through; if you ship parcels, it affects damage rates.
Start with a manageable order
A smaller first order costs more per unit but reduces the risk of holding stock that does not sell. Once a product proves itself, larger orders improve the unit economics.
Keep records from the beginning
Track your landed cost per unit, not just the supplier price. Businesses that know their true cost per unit price their products with far more confidence.
